Tracking Your AccomplishmentsYou’re going to do lots of awesome work during your internship and you don’t want to forget all of the great things you’ve done!
While you’re working on projects (no matter how small), record what you did and add it to a document. This strategy will help you remember your projects, quantify your accomplishments, and make handing off projects easier once your internship is over. You can give this document to your manager when you leave, so they can see how great of an intern you were.
At the end of your internship, pick a few of the largest projects you worked on and write down the challenges, lessons, and technologies used for each. Also note how many features you pushed to production. This information will be critical for updating your resume and for next year’s interviews. However, be careful not to take any sensitive company information. Speak with your manager if you’re unsure what aspects of your work you’re allowed to discuss.
Final Days Checklist
- Save your pay stubs for tax and future documentation purposes.
- Message everyone you worked closely with and thank them for their time, patience, kindness, and mentorship.
- Make sure that your manager is aware of all of your accomplishments throughout the internship. If they don’t know what you did, they can’t possibly give you the return offer that you deserve.
- Add/polish off documentation for code that you’re handing off. Documentation is a key skill for Software Engineers, and your manager will be impressed if you can master it.
- Share handoff notes with your team. These notes should include a list of ongoing tasks and where you left off on each one. This document is another important skill for SWEs, and it will be very helpful for your team when they pick up the projects you were working on.
