Think of internships at FAANG+ companies like admission to Ivy League schools. They’re incredibly competitive, and honestly aren't going to be the best option for most people. If you’re looking for your first tech experience, don’t think you yet have the technical skills for top companies, or are looking for a (potentially) more relaxed summer experience, here are alternative programs to consider.
Startup Internships
Startups can offer great opportunities, especially if you’re willing to accept a slightly lower salary. Internships at start-ups usually include increased responsibility, great learning opportunities, and a high chance of a return offer.
How to Find Internships at Startups
- Reach out through LinkedIn/email: send a quick message to the companies you’re interested in, explaining your experience and why you’d like to join the company. Even if they don’t have jobs posted on their career site, small companies are often looking for students to join them and help out.

Summer Research
Professors are constantly looking for new students to help with their research. It’s usually as simple as sending an email to a professor whose work you’re interested in. Staying on campus over the summer can introduce you to new groups of friends, let you relax and destress after a long school year, and give you plenty of time to prepare for next year’s internship search.
Projects/Online Courses
Two more great options are working on personal projects and taking courses to expand your skills.
