While your interview itself is by far the most important factor in determining if you’ll make the next round, seeming grateful and friendly can give you a boost over someone who seems entitled and uninterested.
Email Your RecruiterIt’s a good idea to email your recruiter to let them know that you just had your interview, as it will give them a reminder to gather feedback from the interviewer and hopefully relay next steps to you quickly. This email can also be a good opportunity to ask any questions you have about the process or timeline.
Example
Hi Mary,
I wanted to let you know that I just finished a great conversation with Jake! I really enjoyed speaking with him and I’m looking forward to hearing back from you soon.
Thanks a lot for setting up the interview!
Take care,
Alan
Thank Your InterviewerAdditionally, if you have the interviewer’s email, it’s nice to send them a thank you either later that day or the next day. Be aware that this probably won’t impact your likelihood of getting the job at all, but it’s always good to come across well for networking purposes (and because we can never have too much kindness!).
Record DetailsLastly, write a brief summary of the interview in whatever tool you’re using to organize applications, including the strategies that worked and ones that didn’t. These notes can help you during your next interview with the company, and can also be good points of reference when preparing for future interviews with other companies.
